Thinning hair is common in both men and women. While the causes are often treatable (including certain illnesses and vitamin deficiencies), in many cases they are simply genetic. You can maximize your hair health using scalp massages and conditioning treatments, but if you’ve got a special occasion coming up, a quick style fix can also help.

1. Hair dyes

Lighter hair shades conceal thinning hair more than darker ones. If you’re nervous about going completely blonde, try experimenting with highlights and lowlights, to create depth of colour. The downside of this option is that bleaching your hair is very damaging to the hair shaft, and this can cause hair breakage. Don’t bleach your hair yourself (unless you’re a qualified hairdresser!), and don’t try to lighten your hair more than a few shades at a time.

2. Layers

Adding in layers creates texture and volume in the hair. This option is far less damaging for your hair than dyes, and if you don’t like the style, you can always grow it out. Research hair styles for your particular shaped face, to see what will suit you, and take some photos with you to the hairdresser, so you get exactly what you want.

3. Add accessories

If your hair is thin because of chemical damage or over-styling, chances are it could do with a break from dyes and hair products. Be gentle with your hair, and give it some ‘days off’ from styling, by wrapping it in funky headscarfs, wide headbands, or even cute hats.

4. Apply hair fibres

Coloured hair-fibres can be applied to thinning areas to essentially ‘fill in’ these areas. The fibres use static electricity to attach themselves to your existing hair, so unfortunately these aren’t an option for bald areas. However these last as long as your hair stays dry, and are relatively easy to apply. BioTHIK Australia is one example of these products. Unlike scalp dyes, these fibres aren’t affected by humid weather and give a much more natural look.

5. Change your part

If you’ve been styling your hair the same way for a long time, it may surprise you to find out that your hair is less thin in different areas of your scalp. So experiment with different parts and styles, this could be the easiest way to change your look!

Thinning hair needn’t get you down. There are a number of ways to improve the health and vitality of your hair, so it is important to address the root cause of your thinning hair. In the meantime, the good news is that there are so many sneaky ways to conceal your thinning hair. With a few creative styling tricks, you can have hair that looks and feels great!
